Chemtrix

Chemtrix is a chemistry based, arcade style puzzle game aimed at students studying chemistry at a high school or undergraduate level. The app has 2 modes, you can either work through levels where you must make specific molecules, or you can use the free fall mode where atoms continually fall, and you just keep making as many molecules as you can. The app is available in 10 different languages: English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish, and has a rating on the app store of 4.6/5 based on 579 reviews.

User Interface – 0.75/1

  • The graphics in the app are really good, and the overall design of the app is of high quality. The app works well and from what I have seen of it, it doesn’t crash or reset whilst playing it. As you work through the mode that requires you to make specific molecules, the difficulty increases and therefore broadens your knowledge of intramolecular bonds.

In-App Purchases – 0.5/1

  • The app is free and contains around 24 levels to work through plus a free fall mode, but for £0.99 you can fully unlock the app and access many more levels.

Accuracy – 0.75/1

  • The app was found to be mostly accurate, however, the stereochemistry of the molecules created can sometimes be a little off.

Scope – 0.5/1

  • It doesn’t cover a wide scope of chemistry topics; it only really focuses on intramolecular bonding, which is good for learning the basics but not so much for other, more advanced topics.

Platform Accessibility – 0.5/1

  • The app is only available on IOS for iPhone and MacBook.

OVERALL SCORE – 3/5
