ChemByDesign

This app is similar to ReactionFlash, but it is more detailed than just one step synthesis. ChemByDesign shows a full step by step synthesis for each reaction to allow for the user to use it as a lab manual if needed or just to include its complex schemes in a report or dissertation. There are 2916 reaction schemes available which is more extensive than Reaxys effort. The website for the app also allows you to submit possible reaction schemes to the developers which is a nice touch.

User Interface: 1.0/1.0 This app allows the user to search reactions by their discovery year, author, reaction name or it provides a list of compounds with their pharmaceutical name to which they’re all in alphanumerical order, there is also a search bar function. This app seems to have an old feel about the U.I with icons looking slightly blurry but this does not take away from the function of the app and its usability.

In App Purchases: No, 1.0/1.0

Accuracy: 1.0/1.0 The schemes found in this app were not found to be incorrect, it is a professional and mature app for the correct target audience of undergraduates and possibly postgraduates.

Scope: Mainly aimed at undergraduates this app delivers to this level to a more than adequate degree. It allows users to blank out certain reactions to allow for a great learning experience not too dissimilar to ReactionFlash, but it is carried out in a different manner, maybe even more useful to the user as parts of the reaction scheme can be revealed in any manner the user wishes. This app also has a ‘dice’ function where when clicked a random reaction scheme will be presented and the user will have to work out the correct sequence.

Platform Accessibility: 0.75/1.0 (iPhone, iPad, and Android)

OVERALL SCORE 4.75/5.0
