Quick Chem: Chemistry Calculator

A great chemistry based utility tool that allows for input by either name (element/compound) or chemical formula.  Abbreviations such as PEG (polyethylene glycol) can be used which is a nice time saver.  A brief description of the entered input is displayed alongside the mass composition, empirical formula and a very basic 'ball and stick' structure.  Additional details on oxidation states and chemical properties such as solubility and magnetism.  Moreover, it states the log P value for the substance where possible.  A simple but effective application.

User Interface

The app has a very basic layout that could be improved upon with future updates.  I liked the pie chart usage to display the data.  A 'dice' function is contained in the search bar to allow a more random experience, which was a nice extra feature.  There are also options to customise the app including changing the theme, keyboard layout and the preferred language.  A simple tutorial is also available.

In-App Purchases

For a small fee of £1.49 the 'Pro' version of this app can be purchased.  The additional benefits of this were not made clear on the Play Store.  It does however get rid of those pesky advertisements.

Accuracy

The data checks for the molecular weight were accurate.  The standard for rounding was three decimal places, this could be altered to your liking in the settings up to a maximum of six decimal places.  The app also contained a list of references for the data available, which I found to be a very professional addition.

Scope

Quick Chem is clearly targeted at students but could also provide a quick reminder to a more advanced chemist.

Platform Accessibility

Not currently available on iOS although it is a relatively new application by Maps labs.
